Kid Capri - 10/9/89
Before mixtapes had clever titles, tracklists, and eye-catching artwork, they were simply identified by a date. And if there’s one date in NYC mixtape history that stands out, it’s today—10/9. Why, you ask? Well, that’s the date of Kid Capri’s classic mixtape—10/9/89—that features one of the most iconic blends of all-time at the top of Side A: Stephanie Mills “Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel)” b/w The Honey Drippers “Impeach The President.”
Beyond that, Capri packs the tape with plenty of flavor by now-legendary rap acts like Run-D.M.C., EPMD, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, and so many more.
Here’s an unreleased quote from our Capri interview, where he talks about his dated tapes making just as much noise as his others with titles, including his acclaimed Old School series:
Kid Capri: 10/9, 10/22, 10/24—they were just as classic as those. They just didn't have titles like Old School 1, Old School 2, they had dates. So, you might think they wouldn't be as recognized as the others, but they sold as much and they were just as classic.
Help us celebrate the release of Do Remember! with this bonus selection from our 50 TAPES run, which is also available now to stream on Apple Music. And enjoy this clip of Kid Capri and Stephanie Mills meeting (for the first time!) and performing a live version of the iconic blend.
