If you’re like us, you’re hype for the three-day weekend. And since MDW is a great time to hang with family and friends outside, we figured we’d bless you with a dope mix to throw on at your BBQs—a Kenny Dope mix, to be exact.
Brooklyn-born DJ/producer Kenny Dope is a legend in the game who’s had his hand in all sorts of heat over the years. As one-half of the three-time GRAMMY-nominated duo Masters at Work with “Little” Louie Vega, he’s helped lace dance floors with loads of house hits, plus cook up fire remixes with everyone from Michael Jackson to Daft Punk. But his hip-hop roots are strong and can be traced back to his come-up in the ‘80s, including his involvement as a DJ and producer on the 1988 KAOS album Court’s In Session.
Kenny Dope’s been super-influential over the years, and as you’ll see below, he’s connected with the best of the best.
Here’s a clip of Kenny Dope from 2010 spinning a funky set at Rock and Soul in NYC so those unfamiliar can get a feel for how he gets down on the decks.
Okay, now let’s take it back. On his 1999-released mixtape Joints Vol. 1, Kenny keeps his focus strictly hip-hop with an onslaught of classic ‘80s and early ‘90s singles, including a few fresh R&B/hip-hop blends that are seamlessly injected into the mix. If you’re looking for a tape to throw on this weekend that flows with no skips and is crafted by a true master, look no further.
Just peep the tracklist below. You won’t need the fast-forward button here.
Enjoy the tape. And have a dope Memorial Day Weekend, y’all!
