Kay Slay & Puerto Rican DJ Demo - Warning Part 2
A gem from The Drama King's early mixtape days.
The Drama King’s reign in the mixtape game happened more toward the turn of the century—the late ‘90s into the 2000s—but he was making tapes well before then, too. And as we explore during our interview with Slay inside the pages of Do Remember!, Puerto Rican DJ Demo was not only a collaborator during his first stint making mixtapes in the early ‘90s, but a huge motivator after he came home from doing a bid to take a second shot at making tapes.
Here are some pull quotes from our interview referencing Kay Slay’s relationship with Demo:
Kay Slay: Shout out to Puerto Rican DJ Demo, that was the homie right there from my neighborhood…
…As far as the mixtape game, DJ Demo was the person who kept telling me over and over, pressing me ’til I finally did it. And he was right…
…I didn’t wanna be a fuckin’ mixtape DJ or the mixtape king. To me, coming from the streets, that’s some stupid shit. It took me a minute for me to even do it because Demo asked me on several occasions. There were even people in my crew telling me that shit was played out. All of this shit just happened. It was not a plan.
Warning Part 2, a follow-up to Kay Slay and Demo’s first tape together (see above), was released in 1995, a few years before Slay really came into his own and took over the mixtape game in NYC. That said, it’s an early gem that we’re excited to share with you all as part of our 50 TAPES series. Peep the tracklist.
For more on Slay’s illustrious and trendsetting mixtape run, definitely make sure to check out his Do Remember! interview, which was conducted just months before he passed away.
Actually, while we have you, enjoy this exclusive excerpt from the book - a breakdown of some of Slay’s favorite artist-hosted mixtapes, taken from “The Shift To CDs” chapter:
Much love and respect to the late, great Drama King. We’re so honored to have spoken with him for Do Remember! as his contributions to NYC mixtape culture were immeasurable.
RIP DJ Kay Slay.
