Double R & G-Bo The Pro - Tape #21: A Whole Different Shine
The legendary Harlem duo comes correct with a proper mix of exclusive freestyles, new rap joints, and R&B blends.
Double R & G-Bo The Pro just might be the most beloved duo from the golden era of NYC hip-hop mixtapes. As the story goes, Double R was already on the scene in Harlem making tapes when he linked up with G-Bo, who introduced him to the 4-track. From there, they teamed up and began making tapes together, starting with Tape #9.
By Tape #21: A Whole Different Shine, released in 1995, Double R and G-Bo had already hit their stride. They were top sellers at neighborhood mixtape spots, and fans knew they could always count on the two for high-quality and often multi-genre mixes with exclusive blends—plus, they didn’t talk all over their tapes.
We had the pleasure of speaking to G-Bo in-depth for Do Remember!, and he broke down the origin story of how he linked up with Double R, as well as the creative and technical aspects that led to their success in the mixtape game. And during the interview, G-Bo rattled off a Top 5 list of his favorite tape releases, ranking Tape #21 at the top. Here’s what he had to say about it:
G-Bo: That’s probably my favorite because we did old school R&B in a way that hadn’t been done before. We also had some rappers on there. Agent 106 was on there. Ced Tha Don was on there, who to me is the best MC that ever walked the planet, still to this day. Every strength that we had was displayed on that tape.
Make sure to look out for a couple exclusive “remixes” by Double R’s biological brother—the one and only Ted Smooth—on Side B. Plus read more about G-Bo, Double R, Ced Tha Don’s street hit “Trinidadian Girl,” and more inside the pages of Do Remember!
