Doggtime - Just The Way You Like It
R&B/hip-hop flavor courtesy of one of Queens' most beloved blend tape DJs.
If you frequented NYC mixtape spots in the ‘90s, there’s no doubt you came across one of Doggtime’s joints. One of the most prolific mixtape DJs, Doggtime’s steady releases were always filled with his own flavorful concoctions, blending vocals and acapellas from different records to create cassette classics designed for cruising the city.
In fact, Doggtime was dropping so rapidly at one point, his fellow Queens mixtape DJ—the one and only DJ Clue—suggested he take the “less is more” business approach. Peep the unreleased quote from our Do Remember! interview with Doggtime:
Doggtime: The first thing Clue told me was that I made too many tapes. But I just liked to blend. It was like, “If I got 25 blends, I’m going to make a tape.” He literally told me I’m stepping on my own feet. Before this project can fully mature, or be fruitful let’s say, I was coming out with a different one, stepping on the previous one. I was making two tapes a week.
In Queens, you make tapes every day. Two tapes a week was nothing. So Clue was the one that got me to make one tape per month, and I’m like, “One tape a month?!” It worked out a whole lot better.
Now here’s a gem from Doggtime’s hefty catalog. Just The Way You Like It is R&B heavy, but with plenty of hip-hop ingredients. The blends are bountiful, and the exclusives are perfectly integrated as well, as he sets the tape off with a new SWV and Puff Daddy collabo before diving into a laidback reworking of Mary J. Blige’s “I Can Love You” over Biggie’s pimped-out Life After Death cut “The World Is Filled…”
And on Side B, he does the same, kicking things off with new music by Lost Boyz, Rampage, and Heavy D before diving back into a medley of fire blends. You can’t go wrong with a Doggtime tape, and this one right here makes that point crystal clear.
