Learn a bit about the founder and amazingly talented artist @skandalgraf, and what inspired ‘The Rap Tapes’:
Inspired by my love of rap, drawn during a period while studying the art and history of the cassette format throughout hip-hop. I created this piece to depict a crucial evolutionary stage of an artists growth. The presentation of a cassette tape tucked neatly into its J Card. Housed in its case, like a trading card cased in one touch always has appealed to the kid in me.
Throughout my years of collecting tapes I’ve never come across anything like the NYC mixtapes and their artwork. The colors, concept choices and simplistic pre-photoshop layering of images to create a cover reminiscent of a newspaper article or a comic book cover so many artists and DJ's alike adopted, and that stayed prevalent during the era has become an art movement in itself.
Interviews and the early tracks that helped some of the greatest hip-hop musicians rise to fame have been captured in these recordings. The visual imagery has been recreated from original pieces acquired via numerous years of collecting.
Peep the piece @skandalgraf went crazy on celebrating the release of the print above.
I painted this paying homage to the Springtime Pt 2 : The Payback. I wanted to incorporate a classic ‘90s mixtape cover into my art and create a 2024 version.
The character I put my own twist on, flying a drone instead of a gun to representing (desert storm) modern warfare.
The payback, a display of respect for a culture that shaped me as an artist.
