Bronx DJ Jazzy Joyce popped up on a lot of rap fans’ radars when she made a guest appearance on the Digable Planets “9th Wonder (Blackitolism)” single in 1994. And folks living in the tri-state area also knew her from being a DJ/on-air personality on Hot 97’s ‘Ladies Night’ for well over a decade.
But Jazzy Joyce’s hip-hop story dates back to 1986, when she dropped the classic single “It’s My Beat” with rapper Sweet Tee on Profile Records. Plus, she was DJing in clubs since she was only 13 years old, and making mixtapes for the streets.
There weren’t a lot female DJs back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, let alone female mixtape DJs. But thankfully, Jazzy Joyce made her mark on the game and inspired many others after her to follow in her footsteps. And for that, along with her consistently dope contributions to hip-hop, we will always salute her.
In the spirit of back-to-school week in NYC, check out Jazzy Joyce’s Back To School tape from 1993, which was loaded with flavor for hip-hop fans to throw in their cars and Walkmans as they returned to the daily school year grind.
And not only does she feature music on her tape by the best artists in New York, but she plays joints by hip-hoppers from across the country too, including new music by MC Eiht, Spice 1, Common Sense, MC Breed and 2Pac, Digital Underground, and more. Plus, there’s plenty of R&B flavor in the mix, including now classics by Xscape and Zhane.
So get your backpacks, Trapper Keepers, pencil cases, and loose leaf ready—it’s time for some ‘90s new school year nostalgia with the Queen of the Wheels of Steel, Jazzy Joyce.
