DJ Evil Dee - Soundbombing
Black Moon and Da Beatminerz member Evil Dee links up with Rawkus Records in its infancy to drop a backpacker classic.
Evil Dee put out a shit ton of dope mixtapes through the ‘90s, which of course was parallel-pathed with his legendary contributions as a member of rap group Black Moon and production duo Da Beatminerz. And thankfully, we were able to interview Evil Dee and his brother Mr. Walt (the other half of Da Beatminerz) for Do Remember!
During our interview with Evil Dee, he told us all about his mixtape beginnings and odysseys, including his time selling tapes at famed spots like Knickerbocker Records and Beat Street, plus pushing his own tapes out on tour with Black Moon, with Tape Kingz, and even directly with the bootleggers on street corners throughout NYC.
In addition, Evil Dee broke down for us how the Rawkus Records Soundbombing mixtape came to be. Released officially through retail outlets, the tape was a backpacker’s dream, stuffed with songs by Rawkus artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Company Flow, and others.
Check out Do Remember! to read Evil Dee’s story behind Soundbombing, and much, much more. But for now, enjoy a trip back to ‘97. “Evil Dee is on the mix, come on, kick it!”
Stream Soundbombing below, and stay tuned for more 50 TAPES posts as we celebrate the release of Do Remember! The Golden Era of NYC Hip-Hop Mixtapes, out now via Rizzoli.
