DJ Chubby Chub - Summer Jump Off
The former Original Flavor member and mixtape giant keeps it hot.
DJ Chubby Chub was quite prolific during the golden era of NYC mixtapes, dropping phat cassettes regularly through the ‘90s. And he was also a member of Original Flavor alongside Ski and T-Strong aka Tone Hooker, who were best known for their 1993 single “Can I Get Open” which features a pre-Reasonable Doubt Jay-Z.
By 1999, Original Flavor was long gone, but Chubby Chub was still dropping tapes consistently. And his ‘99 tape Summer Jump Off was loaded with heat for the season.
Yes, summers felt a lot different in New York after The Notorious B.I.G.’s murder, but his peers were still going strong—as proven on this tape. Both sides get set off with dope Nas exclusives, there are Jigga joints scattered throughout, and Biggie’s homegirl Lil’ Kim shines on maybe her hottest feature of all-time with Mobb Deep on the “Quiet Storm (Remix).”
Props to Chubby Chub for all his contributions to the NYC mixtape game, and of course for this BBQ-ready cassette which we encourage you to press play on at your next summer gathering. Plus, check for Chubbito’s Way, one of our favorite movie-inspired mixtape covers of all-time, inside “The Artwork” chapter of Do Remember!

Not only does this month mark the 30th anniversary of the date on the cassette, but it’s chock-full of quintessential mid-’90s clappers, including a very rare and early Jay-Z cut toward the beginning of Side A known as “In The Park” as well as an early taste of the “In My Lifetime” B-side “I Can’t Get Wid Dat.”
Here’s an unpublished quote from our Do Remember! interview with Clark Kent on Chubby Chub’s inside access to Jay-Z exclusives:
Clark Kent: Chubby Chub was one of the few mixtapes DJs that got most of our Roc-A-Fella shit because he was right there—he was Ski’s DJ. So he would be at my house and he’d be like, “Yo, can I get that?” “Ask Jay, don’t ask me. Why are you asking me about Jay’s stuff?” Because he would sometimes make his tapes at my house. He was down with us.
This tape is right in the Do Remember! sweet spot. Fuck a tracklist, just let it ride. Because unless you hate classic singles, collabos, remixes, and deep cuts by artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Jeru, Artifacts, Wu-Tang, Biggie, Sadat X, O.C., MC Eiht, Slick Rick, Nice & Smooth, Busta, Big Daddy Kane, and of course Jay-Z, you won’t be disappointed.
