DJ Camilo is a pillar in the New York City hip-hop community, rocking clubs across the boroughs on the regular and holding down prime slots on Hot 97. His contributions to the culture are vast, which is why both his peers and the people of the Big Apple show him so much respect. And a lot of that respect was earned during his run as a mixtape DJ.
Not only could Camilo be counted on for tight hip-hop mixes that always flowed top to bottom, but he would also release R&B and reggae tapes, too. With the reggae especially, Camilo was quite prolific, dropping double digit numbers of all-reggae tapes, many of which featured eye-catching cover illustrations to match the irie vibes of his mixes (see example below).
His first of the series, Old School Reggae Part 1, is particularly dope as Camilo takes listeners on a dancehall journey, mixing through classics like Shabba Ranks “Mr. Loverman,” Tenor Saw “Ring The Alarm,” Junior Reid “One Blood,” and Barrington Levy “Broader Than Broadway,” plus plenty more by everyone from Johnny Osbourne to Super Cat.
This tape embodies the sound and spirit of Jamaica that continues to permeate New York City like the legalized smell of street corner ganja. And only Camilo could put it down like this.
